Finnish Doctoral Network for Music Research

The Finnish Doctoral Network for Music Research is comprised of eight universities: Sibelius Academy, the University of Helsinki, the Universities of Eastern Finland, Jyväskylä, Oulu, Tampere and Turku, and Åbo Akademi.

The central operating principle of the network is upholding the preceding Doctoral Programme in Music Research (2012–2015), that is, supporting national multidisciplinary research on music and the surrounding cultural reality.

NOTE: This network does not award doctoral degrees. It exists to further collaboration in doctoral studies and supervision between music research units in Finnish universities. If you are interested in doctoral studies in Finland, kindly contact the professor(s) working in university department(s) that appear most suitable for your topic and approach. Also, there are no funded doctoral student positions available in the network itself: all doctoral students within the network are post-graduate students of the partner universities.

null MA Kristian Wahlström's rehearsal defense on Zoom, March 23, 2021

MA Kristian Wahlström’s (Uni. Helsinki) rehearsal defense (“nippupäivä”) will take place via Zoom  on March 23, 2021, from 2 to 6 pm. The event will be organised by the Finnish Doctoral Network for Music Research as part of its yearly research seminar, the Winter School.

The title of Wahlström's thesis is "Student-Centered Musical Expert Pedagogy in Popular Music and Hard Rock Groove – a Design-Based and Psychodynamic Approach" (please see abstract below), and postdoctoral researcher Tuulikki Laes (Uniarts) will be acting as the opponent. Please note that the rehearsal defense will be arranged in English. The event will follow the customary pattern of Finnish PhD defenses, and the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the rehearsal defense.

All interested network members are welcome to attend the event. We kindly ask you to register for this rehearsal defense separately by  filling out an online form by March 16. More information (incl. the Zoom link and parts of the dissertation) is or will be available on the Moodle website of the seminar. Please find the Moodle link and instructions for Moodle access in the confirmation e-mail you will receive once registered. If you have any further questions about the event, kindly contact the network coordinator (nuppu.koivisto@uniarts.fi, tel. 0504779213).

The network will be organising two further rehearsal defenses around the Winter School dates – those of MA Janne Palkisto (Uni. Turku, February 22, from 10 to 2 pm, registration form available online) and MA Sanna Qvick (Uni. Helsinki, February 24, 2 to 6 pm registration form available online). Please note that the registration deadline for these events is today (February 15).
